What to avoid when fedding red eared slider?

Red-eared sliders are some of the most popular pet turtles in the world. Due to their easy going character and how they greedily beg for food, whether you are beginners and veterans in turtle-keeping hobby, you can easy domesticat these turtles.

However, you still need to do your research on these animals and find out how to best care for them. Apart from best food for red eared slider, you also should know about what food to avoid when feeding them, ensure they are satisfied under your care.


#1 Bread

Red eared sliders eat almost anything you offer them include bread, they can eat bread but it does not mean it is good for them. Bread is not a healthy food for your turtle. Turtles don’t have certain enzymes to breakdown bread. So, they cannot digest bread.

Not only that, bread contains a lot of unnecessary additions, therefore it may be harmful to turtles. The nutrients in bread seem to no velua for optimal growth and overall health of the red eared silder.

#2 Dairy Products

Like bread, red eared slider cannot digest dairy products as they lack certain enzymes to break down those nutrients. Do not feed cheese, yogurt,  milk, butter or other dairy products to your turtles at any stage of their lives, feeding with those may cause severe indigestion.

#3 Raw meat, fish or chicken

The biggest risk here is that raw meat may contain intestinal parasites, raw meat even can be dangerous if they have pesticides on them. This is why you never feed raw chicken or meat due to the risk of bacterial contamination to both you and your captive turtler.

One more reasons here is that these meat are too high in protein for turtles. Sometimes, you can offer them small portions of cooked fish or chicken as an occasional treat. The protein contents can also contribute to kidney disease in your turtle.

#4 Fruit

Red eared slider are known to consume fruits in the wild, some experts even will recommend fresh fruits such as bananas, berries, apples, and melon for sliders. However, you are better off avoiding giving fruits to your turtle regularly as fruit isn’t a main staple in the red-eared sliders diet and it may cause diarrhea. Fruits are okay to eat, but limit it to very small quantities as a special treat.
